Description
Yu-Shoku is pre-laminated with a VG10W stainless core steelwith mokume cladding (forged from copper, brass and stainless steel). DPS (depletion prevention system) adds a thin nickel shim between the core steel and the cladding. The nickel acts as a barrier to stop carbon migration between the stainless steel core and mokume outer layers and creates a particularly dramatic and bold transition line. We recommend not upset forging this material as this can cause delamination.
- Composition: It’s VG10 with added Tungsten (Wolfram), which forms hard carbides, increasing wear resistance and toughness.
- Performance: Users and manufacturers report it offers better durability (around 20% more) and cutting performance (around 25% better) than standard VG10, without sacrificing rust resistance.
- Application: Excellent for demanding outdoor knives (like Fallkniven’s F1, S1 models) and premium kitchen knives (Gyutos, Santokus).
- Manufacturer: Produced by Takefu Special Steel Co., Ltd. in Japan, the same company behind VG10.
The tungsten addition creates fine, hard carbides that resist wear, meaning the blade stays sharp longer and can handle tougher use, making it a top-tier choice for knife enthusiasts seeking superior performance.
Takefu Special Steel Co., Ltd. manufactures and markets clad metals using rolling mills, bonding presses, and diffusion bonding. The company was founded in 1954 and is based in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, Japan.
Clad or composite materials are composed of more than two kinds of dissimilar metals having high functional capabilities; the bonding process combines the advantages of each metal into one solid piece where the sum is greater than the two parts. Takefu Special Steel Co. supplies a wide variety of cutlery materials not only for household use but also for use in industrial machinery mainly to cutlery production areas both in Japan and abroad. For cutlery steels Takefu Special Steel Co ranks first in market share nationwide in Japan in the manufacture of dissimilar metal composite materials (clad materials. Takefu Special Steel Co also caters to the demands for nonferrous composite materials such as titanium, copper, aluminum, etc. Thus, besides cutlery steels, they have successfully developed a new field of industrial materials such as special metal molds, electrodes, etc.
